I'm sorry for making multiple threads, I am just curious about so many things.

I stutter and my father stutters. Is stuttering passed on genetically? Will a stutter's offspring always stutter? Please share information about your family and their stutter, or lack there of.

My father or mother don't stutter. My mother's brother use to and his two boys do. I have twin girls and they are stuttering, but they might out grown it, because they are only 4 yrs. old. A few of my nieces and nephews started to stutter and it was quickly gone. I don't know if it is in the genes, but boys are higher to stutter. Well that is what some web sites tell me.

Stuttering tends to run in families. One study found that 60 percent of stutterers had at least one parent who stuttered.
Stuttering genes have also been found.

It goes way back to before my ancestors even came to america.

My great great great great Grandfather Stuttered.
My great great great Grandfather Stuttered.
My great great Grandfather stuttered.
My great grand father stuttered.
My Grandfather stutterered.
My Dad stutters.
I stutter.
My son(s) is(are) going to stutter.
There are absolutively NO girls in my family who stutter.
And a whole bunch of my cousins stutter.

My parents knew I was going to stutter when they were planning on having me. I was not an accident.

my uncle stutters and i am pretty sure my grandad did, i think it runs losely in family lines... i.e. is somehow related but doesn't always run directly down, (dad-son-grandson)

So then there has to be a stuttering gene that is passed down correct? It seems that with Dave its only affects the males.

My Uncle stuttered as a kid, but he grew out of it. His cousin stuttered well into adulthood. My parents do not stutter, my sisters do not stutter nor does my brother. I have two daughters who do not stutter. None of my cousins stutter. They all wear glasses and I do not.

This is very interesting, nobody in my family stutters, all the way back to the greats from my mom and dads side of the family.

Ive always considered this when deciding to have children or not. I would feel guilty passing this onto my child. I'd rather not have kids. I dont know if that sounds bad or not. But it would break my heart knowing that my genes caused my kid to have to deal with this bullshit their whole life.

its kinda messed up because there is no one in my family who stutters, at least my family insists upon that. i was born in china and spoke chinese and didn't stutter but when i came to america at the age of seven, and started to learn english, thats when my stuttering occured. my mom has had anxiety problems and my dad seems to stutter (aka block) but he doesn't prolong or repeat words so it probably is because he doesn't know what word to use since his english isn't the best.

Interesting!

My brother and I are the only ones who stutter. Well, he use to, but he's now deceased (GOD bless his soul) after committing suicide due to severe depression.

My sister doesn't stutter and my mum and dad don't stutter.

My dad however, was extremely mentally abusive towards me and my brother, so we developed stutters at an early age.

My older sister escaped my father's abusive nature by marrying very young (@ 19), so she wasn't exposed to the mental abuse and put-downs my brother and I were exposed to.

I was in a semi tumulous (sp?) family that used to fight alot.. my parents would fight get into screaming matches etc etc.. and there was a constant fear of divorce between the two. this might have been a factor in what caused me to stutter.

As far as I know, I'm the only member of the family that has ever stuttered
