Howdy...I'm Michael. I hail from the small town of Philadelphia PA haha.

But lets get down to business. I'd love to know if anyone else has this kind of problem or has heard of anyone with it.

For as long as I could remember Ive always been called a fast speaker, but never really a stutterer. I come from a big town in the NE so people tend to speak fast anyway so it kind of fits in. I loved to give speeches, perform in shows and plays at school...and for my college major even picked Communication studies with an emphasis in Journalism/News Reporting. This is just all such a pain because I have always been known to be an extremely outgoing and social person and now this is kind of taking a shot at it.

Physically when all of the below is happening, I can sometimes feel a tightness in my chest and I may feel like there is a slight breathing problem going on.

Over the course of the past 2-3 years things have gotten pretty weird with my speech. Its not what many people outside of a speech impairment circle consider a stutter, and by that I mean its not a repetition of sounds like, bu-bu-bu-butter or could you pu-pu-please. Its more of the words I see in front of me or the words I have in my head being blocked from coming out of my mouth. I could be thinking of the word banana, and then all of the sudden my mouth wont want to say it and Ill have to beat around the bush for like 10 seconds with um's, and you-know's, or other small talk just to get to that word of banana. I might even substitute the word in the end if I know I have no shot of saying it. Another quick example is if I know I am calling a person and their name is Sean Jones. When I call, I'll say "Hi, is there a Mr. Jones there...first name Sean". For some odd reason, my body wont let me say that word Sean or another first name. It just feels more comfortable to start with a last name.

A third and final example I'll give, which I believe to be the most interesting, is how I cannot seem to bring up certain topics sometimes. If I was sitting were sitting with a group of people and wanted to bring up the topic of playing poker...the sentence I will want to say will be on the tip of my tounge but it just wont come out. I can try like 3 or 4 times and it wont come out and then finally I will be able to say my sentence. But, if I were asked..."So Mike, what is your favorite hand."...I would easily complete my sentence and say something along the lines of A/K. So basically if I am called upon I can give you a nice concise answer.

I will have small periods of time when my speech does appear to be fairly normal, and I'll be able to carry on a conversation for a minute or so...but then it goes again into that beating around the bush speech just to get to a certain word.

Sorry this is so long, but I've been wanting to get this off my chest for a while and just wondering if anyone else has these problems or has heard of something like it.

Not all stutterers stutter visibly. I would say that you have an internalised stutter. Your vocal cords sometimes lock together tightly, that's why you can't say the words on occasion. In any case, many stutterers actually don't stutter physically because they avoid difficult words.
