It's not so much that the advice to sing is a joke, as it is nonsense. As educated people who stutter, we all know that singing uses a different part of our brains--a part that is not wired incorrectly for speech.

But as educated people who stutter, do you really expect any of us to want to communicate orally by singing? Look, it's bad enough when our fluency is rough; sometimes people are inclined to react with confusion, or disbelief. By singing, it wouldn't just be confusion--it would be people doubting our intelligence.

Just because it "works," doesn't mean it's the right option for us.

this singing instead of speaking this is completely ridiculous! we are not going to walk around singing. Who does this????- - This "tip" is obnoxious. Tips are helpful and THIS is not.

I think Jik79 meant that if you really get stuck on words and feel horribly tense, and you absolutely must get this word out the right way (for example, introducing people, saying specific names, etc) then speaking with a melody/varying pitches/tones will definitely help (not exactly singing, but varying pitches up and down sorting following a melody). I think this helps, obviously not all the time, but it is definitely a nice trick especially when you absolutely have to get a word out within a time frame.
Another trick I learned was from the book VALSALVA CONTROL (google it), basically if you breathe out from your diagphram before you say difficult phrases this really helps because it relaxes your muscles and the changes of severely blocking are much less. We have a tendency to push the words out and get more tense or speak harder when we are blocking. YOU HAVE TO DO THE OPPOSITE--when blocking, TAKE A BREATHE, and EASE INTO THE WORD SLOWLY. THis can be difficult especially if you talk alot, but you have to remember that everyone speaks at his or her own pace and who cares what people think anyways if you speak a tad slower--but actually you probably won't even speak that much slower to others, its all in our minds! :-)

Sorry when I reigstered with the board, it did not show my post at first. I was going to make a note, that #1 was sort of silly. Please remember I was just trying to be helpful. I am fellow stutterer. #2 has worked some for me.

But I am started speech therapy in a few weeks. Because I still struggle quite a bit.

Not all 7 tips are stupid and ridiculous. If one tip doesn't help you, fine. It may help someone from a stuck word. I say to review all the tips out there and use what's useful and don't bash any tip at all since different people need different techniques.

To improve your phonation, take a deep breathe and chant the following vowels for 5 to 7 seconds (longer if you can).
"Ohm" like in ohhhhmmmmm
Ah, A, Eee, I (eye), o, oo, u

When you speak, break the sentence into Shorter Phrases like maximum 4 to 5 words.
And use Frequent Pauses between phrases so you don't rush.

i was hoping this forum wouldn't turn into every other forum i'm a part of... when i was on here more it was a nice group that didn't realy put anybody down... and it looks like the putdowns have made it here as well'

the "sing it" technique is one of the ways i was taught back in the days that i took speech therapy, along with the "deep breath". i'm pretty sure the singing one isn't telling you to turn your life into a musical or showtune. if it works for some it isn't stupid. if it didn't help you then it didn't help you. no need to be so harsh

Actually stupid and rediculous are mild. Even the best speech therapists in the world have very little success with helping stutterers be more fluent. In fact there is some evidence that years of therapy has hardened and worsened stuttering in some. So giving unproven "tips" might have harmful effects for some , if they take this crap to heart. So as a long term stutterer who's speech and self esteem were worsened by professional therapy, I cringe when I see a laymen giving technical "tips"'.

I dont feel I was being harsh, I was being realistic. Most stutterers are tired of hearing ridiculous "solutions" to solving their stuttering.-- Singing a word is not a technique and taking a deep breath can just turn into a person taking a deep breath before every word they are going to stutter on...which is basically a trick that will lose its effectiveness. Then the person is just left hyperventilating everytime they stutter.-- The reaction to this thread is just the frustration that a lot of stutters feel when told to do ridiculous things to solve their stuttering. --

Some absurd comments which people should be ashamed off, but unfortunately those people are the sort of people can't be spoken to in logical terms, and they let all stutterers down badly.

As I stutterer for many years, I know that stuttering is often made worse by a lack of self-esteem and treating them so badly on here just reinforces those thoughts. I wish we could support them on here, not take them behind the shed for a verbal beating.

I personally applaud the attempt to add some constructive tips. Anyone who doesn't agree just has to give a reasoned polite explanation as to why and not give personal insults.

Being a backyard therapist with no training helps no one. I know from 50 years of well over 20 therapys and therapists that even the experts have very little success. Why would anyone take what you say when it comes to techniques seriously? You obviously have done very little research or you would know its recommended not to tell a person who stutters to slow down and take deep breath, Useless crap most of us of heard since we were 5.

My first tip is not a technical one. Its to accept yourself as a person who stutters, do everything you can to improve yourself as a whole person. Second is to run as fast as you can from any backyard therapist that has technical tips about stuttering.

Hello Friends,

There are many different reasons for stuttering, genetic factors being one of them. However, many people have overcome their stuttering-stammering and are simply sharing tips, tricks and techniques that they have used.

Certainly, they may not work for everyone, but I'm sure they'll work for some. I do agree that if we are not therapists, we do not want to say that we are. That being said, we're all here to give advice, tips and ideas that hopefully have worked for someone, yes?

Blessings

Hello.

Were you referring to my post (marketing)? If not, sorry for this post. If so, I don't see any content that could remotely be considered as markting. Again, if this comment wasn't referencing me I do apologize.
