View Full Version : Advice Needed....

In a couple of days I'm meeting a guy friend from high school. He asked me out on a hangout date. He said we can do whatever, play video games, go out to dinner. He didn't actually say it was a date, I'm just guessing it is because I asked him if he wanted to know anything about me since we haven't talked since high school. He graduated a few years before I did and I graduated in 2005 so it's been a long time. In high school I hung out with a small group of friends, it was about 6 of us. Ever since high school some of us have tried to stay in control and others don't bother. Anyway, I need advice because I know he must remember that I occasionally stutter when I'm excited or nervous. I don't want to start stuttering and make a fool of myself in case he really is interested in wanting to be more than just friends. I know if he really was interested in ME and not concerned about my stuttering then I know everything will be fine. If anyone has any techniques or tips on preparing yourself for a date I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

If you have access to a treadmill or elliptica, I would excercise on it for about 45 minutes to 1 hour. This helps me out before a big date.

A lot of us stutterers found it very hard to ever get dates due to our lack of confidence and self-esteem and looking back, too much thinking about stuttering.
I can't therefore give much advice, but I can say it is important to be yourself. Don't be someone else by attempts to hide your stutter, and perversely is it probably important that you stutter a bit because as you said, you want this guy to like you for who you are, even if that is with a stutter.
Hope it goes well and please let us know how it all goes. We are all with you!

Thank you everyone for replying. The date went well. I didn't stutter very much at all. I was sort of surprised. @benfica I don't have a treadmill but I do practice Tai Chi so next time I can do that. @dookers Thank you for the support. The stutter doesn't make me, it is only a part of me. The guy and I decided to stay in touch and only be friends. Next time I go on a date I have some great tips.
