Hi
I'm 39 never ever stuttered in my life , i don't stutter all the time but it is getting worse. It started this summer i've looked around this site and a few others and the point is that i've had a very bad back and this may have triggered this but to be honest the stutter started around the same time.......any ideas anybody.
Regards.

man... there was a post about spinal alignment and stuttering and the possibilities that they could be related because of our back nerves and neck or something. Did it appear before or after the back problems?

I would contact your local hospital and see if they have a speech therapist on location... therapists at clinics have always been the greatest help for me..
It does happen - stuttering is usually activated by some kind of tension, pressure or stress. During times of war, some soldiers begin to stutter for the first time due to the extremes of battle stress. Your bad back may have raised your base-level tension to such an extent that it triggered the stutter (which must have been latent).

are you taking any meds for depression?
i believe you've misdiagnosed yourself. you just have an innocent stutter where you repeat syllables here and there, right? our definition of stuttering is far from that.
this forum was designed for people who are not fluent and have blocks in their speech, meaning we literally cannot say what they want to. i am saying this because it is VERY rare that out of nowhere somebody just starts stuttering at age 39, regardless of your hurt back. signs of stuttering starts early and if not treated it could mature as your grow older.
if i am wrong feel free to let me know

Maybe you already had a predisposition to stutter. Did you start to talk late as a kid? (ask you mother). Did you stutter early on as a child so far back that maybe you don't even remember and then your speech became normal? Many medications have side-effects that include stuttering, maybe the one you take for your back pain is having that effect on you. I've heard of many people that started stuttering late in life, mostly due to high stress situations. Look around for how they dealt with that. Good luck.

Hi
Thanks for all the replies. i'm not on any medication for anything and never been depressed. Also i did not have speach problems as a child nor have i ever had an issue talking in general . I have also read about the connection with back problems and speach .....
Thanks again

That is VERY rare! Are you sure you really are becoming a stutterer? Or are you just trying to fit in here? ;)

i never heard of someone starting to stutter at 39-sounds unique.
something must have happened at that age, either you had an accident or injury or maybe you forgot you stuttered when you were very young and it has returned to some kind of stress.
have some md's chekc you out for physical caues, take care of it, don't look for answers here, get yourself looked at if it is really true you just started to stutter.:)

I know one person who started to stutter this late in life. It was caused by a mild stroke.

yes you are right, a person with a stroke could start to stutter but it probably doesn't feel like how we feel when we stutter, could you ask him?

what kind of back problems did you have? could you be more specific? This just might turn out to be the answer for stuttering. I remember someone talking about spinal alignment problems and I also had this but have never treated it. It does make a whole lot of sense since the spine is responsible for our nerve system (I think)

My stutter started when I was about 13 or 14. I had no problems as a child but have stuttered since.

I'm not sure how relevant it is but I have had pain in my back (lower back for me) for many years. I was seeing a physical therapist a number of years ago and she told me that my spine was not typical or as it should be in terms of shape. I later had an x ray though and nothing out of the ordinary was detected (so my doctor told me). I still get back pain to this day though in particular at night.
