When I'm talking, and I'm not thinking about my speech, I'm just talking, my speech is almost perfect. But it seems that somewhere in my conscience I think "Hey, you stutter, you're doing good, keep it up" and then I stutter. Does this happen to anyone else? Also, are you able to feel a stutter coming? I can, and when I do I stop, breathe, and stretch out the beginning sound of the work I'll have trouble on. That's what works for me, and I was wondering if anyone else does that, or has the subconscience stutter thing.

I find that when I take my 3 year old upto bed and we read bedtime stories that I know there are certain words I struggle on and my son watches my mouth as I read to him. He has his favourites and one includes the word balloon and I struggle on this word, but I find if I whisper it or ask him what it is I can say the word better.
Its strange, but I have had to explain to him that sometimes I have trouble speaking certain words but although he is too young to fully understand I would hope that he knows about my problem.

I didn't have an problem with my twin girls, reading or talking to them when they were babies. Now that they are 4yrs old, they are picking up an few things from me. They stutter too. They would break eye contact and repeat words and then make eye contact again.
What helps me, is when I am getting close to an word I know I will stutter on, I look at the next word after that and think about that one instead and it usually gets me through. What is helping me the most is when I punch up the story, put stronger feelings into the words. I find the girls enjoy the story better, because they really get involved in the story and I don't notice my stutter at all.

I do that too - I'm concentrating on the second word while attempting the first......

I suppose I do a similar thing to standing tall where when I read my son his stories I use different voices for characters in the story and that sometimes helps. I hope that I make the stories enjoyable and the thing my son doesnt remember is certain words I struggle on, I am sure in time he will ask me why I cant say certain words but I will answer honestly when that time comes.
