I finally went to a doctor yesterday and after explaining what stuttering has done to my life, he prescribed me .25mg xanax 3 times daily and 20mg paxil daily. I know people have had success with these meds separately but what about taking them together, anyone?

hi,
there is no rhyme or reason as to why certain drugs can help people who stutter, if they work they work if not then it doesn't.
my personal experience with paxil is that it could help-if not you can try some other antidepressant.
actually paxil has been officially approved for social anxiety. Paxil is an SSRI and so is lexapro, prozac, etc although these have not been approved for social anxiety but they probably can do the same thing. Did you know that the anti depressants were discovered accidently???!!
THey don't know why they work the way they do, and you can try another SSRI and that one will work!!
xanax directly attacks the anxiety and since anxiety can worsen stuttering then this might work well to a certain extent.
actually the paxil is for anxiety also so it makes sense why he prescribed both.
let us know how it worked out.
how are the side effects?
lenny
How has it been working for you?

For me the paxil made me yawn excessively for about the first two weeks and feel a little tired. I guess its because it slows down your breathing and yawning forces you to take deeper breaths. The paxil takes about two weeks to kick in. I"ve noticed a little reduction in anxiety but I can't really comment on it's effects for another couple weeks.
The Xanax had an immediate, noticeable fluency increase for me. I was prescribed .25mg to take up to 3 times a day as needed. I don't take xanax every day because I don't wanna build up a tolerance or addiction. I normally take it 3-5 days a week and I feel anxiety free, and also not worried 24/7 about what people think about my speech. I still stutter but the blocks are less frequent and much less noticeable. I would say xanax has increased my fluency about 25-50%. I'm going to ask my doc for 1mg xr instead, so hopefully I only take one each day.
I had to see 3 different doctors before one would prescribe me xanzx. So if you guys are interested in trying it, don't get frustrated if the first doc you see doesn't agree with you.
