Hi all,

Just wondered if any of you have tried hypnotherapy to help your stutter. The reason I ask is because in the 1980's I went to one not for my stutter but for problems I believe are linked to having one, lack of confidence, low self esteem and anxiety and very recently if I have a bad day stuttering I listen to the relaxtion tape and I find it helps me and my flow seems to improve.

Hope you are all OK.

Nick :)

That is a good questions, people who smoke had success with it. I once went to an faith healer in my early teens and I was stutter free for the whole summer.

I did and spent a lot of money but it didnt help. But remember everybody is different so you should try it out and maybe it'll help you.

I ahve tried this but feel it did not cure me... it made me realise that the only way to remotly cure yourself is to biuld up confidence... with confidence comes happiness and with happiness i find that i dont stammer anywhere near as much... the more down/drained i feel, the worse i am...

I think the intial 'getting over' the fear of stammering is a big key in becoming fluent...

Hi Lee,

I stutter more when I am tired, stressed out and excited. If I am happy (most of the time) my speech is good and watching that programme last night on Channel 4, my wife said she doesnt notice my stutter that much which made me more happy. Either I hardly stutter or she has lived with me for so long that its part of every day life. I prefer the speech has improved.

Great to hear that, I think that the more comfortable you feel in a place or around someone also helps... EG: when i started university we had to sit in a circle (30+ people) and introduce ourselves and give a berief outline of who we were - 'wost nightmare yeah?', this was tough, i stammered lots. But very quickly i become comfortable around everyone in that group because i knew they all knew i stammered. I do still find one thing differecult tho especially in situations where i dont know anyone, that is saying my name... to me its the hardest thing i could ever have to do...

i could be talking to someone for hours.. fluent, no problems, and then it comes to my name.... Its a no go..... Does anyone else have problems with their name? Have you ever given a false name because there was no way of saying it?

I sometimes struggle on my name, never given a false name for myself but have done for a puppy I was walking for my brother and somebody asked its name, after struggling for what seemed like hours on saying bonnie I said rex, I got a funny look from the people asking.

I got sent on a dale carnegie course by my previous employer to help my confidence and one of the things was to stand up and introduce yourself, absolutely nightmare, but worse was to come, you had to sit with someone else and get to know about them and then introduce them and tell the class what you knew about them, couldnt say university of lancashire for the life of me and in the end the girl I was introducing said it for me. It wasnt the best way to get me out of the so called comfort zone.
