Amazingly that’s a nickname (people use as it’s the only real abbreviation for my name). I’ve stuttered all of my life, and so does my mother, and so did her father. My stutter was really bad when I was little, I couldn’t even speak more than 2 words without doing so, but when I was about 14 it became less severe. I made a concerted effort over about a year to speak more clearly, and it reached the point where only people who knew me were aware I even had one. Unfortunately it has slipped a bit in the years since, mainly due to stress, and now I’d describe myself as a moderate stammerer.

I did go to speech therapy when I was little (although all I remember is playing with toys whilst my mum talked to the therapist), and recently tried again although it had no effect, in fact I think it actually made things a little worse. Basically I’ve accepted it’ll always be this way, and whilst I’d love to find a cure for it, as that would drastically improve my quality of life it’s something that’s a part of my identity. My only grievance’s the way people react to it, as I can’t think of many other afflictions that are openly ridiculed, with almost universal hysterics.

Anyway I hope this doesn’t come across too self-indulgent (I’ve never felt the need to introduce myself on a forum before (but maybe here some background information will help)). Also sorry for talking about my stutter as if it’s a malevolent entity, that needs to be exorcised, it’s kind of unavoidable :D

Cheers
