Hi

I am new here..

Our three and half year old boy seems to struggle with speach. The start of every sentence he seems to repeat his words many times. sometimes he pushes it out and moves on others he gives up.

It started about 6 motnhs ago. A little and we just put it down to him thinking faster than he can talk..but in the past week it has got much worse. To the stage where I can not tell he is avoiding trying to talk.

We talekd to his nursery about it and they said they hadn't noticed it (???) but after we tel lthem they say "yes he is doing and we have told him to talk slower.." Isn't this what you are not supposed to do?

Some friedns said their child went through the same thing at 3 1/2 for a couple of months and it passed. Tell us not to be worried...BUT WE ARE.

I guess we need to go and see a specialist and find out what is going on...

I hope it is just a phase I feel so sorry for him. Tryign to tell me things but giving up mid sentence. I just do not know what to do.

Any advice, help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Nicol

My 3 1/2 year old began to stutter at 18 months. The doctor told us it was normal and she was probably going through a language burst. But the stuttering didn't stop. She gets stuck at the beginning of sentences and repeats words over and over. But she will also get stuck in the middle too. We started the process to begin therapy. At a visit with a pathologist, the doctor made a comment. She said it was a red flag with a stutterer when they do things like squeeze their eyes shut or nod their heads down when they are stuck.

When in doubt see a specialist. They will tell you if you need help or not.

Hi i have just signed up to this forum today. I have a 4 year old son who also stutters he has done since he could talk. We did speech therapy privately, which was quite expensive, as the waiting lists to go public were ridiculous! I didnt like the way it went as we were told to cut into the sentence when hed stutter, finish it for him or say oops thats bumpy, he began to get quite frustrated and not want to continue talking. It got worse a little while ago so we got things moving and he got moved foward on the public list by 6months! He was just assessed and will start therapy once a week very soon:)
I would sugest you see a child health nurse or gp and get a refferal to see a speech therapist. Goodluck
