I started speech therapy last fall and I was beginning to think the view about helping stuttering was just that giving you tools to help when you stutter. I didnt like using easy onset or any of those things because they feel so unnatural to me. So starting in February I started this new program in therapy that is dr. bruce ryans fluency program. It has 4 steps first is reading, then speaking in monologue, then conversation, and then transfer into using it outside the therapy room.
You start out with one word, then move up to speaking for 5 minutes in each one of the steps. If you stutter you have to do the whole step over again. I was really stressed out at first because they do nothing you just talk the whole time and figure out how to not stutter by yourself. Then just one day randomly I suddenly barely stutter. I have gotten so much better, so far its mostly just in therapy (in a whole hour I talked the entire time and stuttered maybe twice). I just asked my sister and my mom if they have noticed me stuttering less and they both said they really have but didnt want to say anything.
I'm just very excited and wanted to share with all of you. Hopefully i'll be able to transfer the fluency completely into the real world. I like this program because it doesnt feel unnatural to me, i'm talking like I always have completely normally but without stuttering. Its completely strange because I havent done anything different at all. Dr. Ryan even says that he doesnt know why it works, but it does.
