I was just wondering if any of you ladies noticed an increase in your stuttering during pregnancy. I am expecting and have noticed a DRASTIC increase in my stuttering. I am wondering if it has anything to do with hormones. All I know is that this is crazy!!!

Wanted to say few things:
Enjoy your full time during your pregnancy.

Try to read good books and movies.

Dont even think about your stuttering and take the tension about it. This may adversely affect your baby.

Hoping you give birth to a healthy baby.

Good luck and have a nice wonderful life.

I'm not a lady, I do not know any women that stutter.

However... my partner was recently pregnant and tension and stress level's rose drastically. As someone that stutter's I know both of these affect my speech so can only assume you are going through something like this.

I have had two children. If I remember correctly I think I had periods where my stuttering was worse than before pregnancy but hadn't really thought about it. I probably would have blamed it on the usual of being extra tired. I always stutter more if I don't sleep as well.

Amey you really need to explain this post on your part! You specifically said that you are"expecting and have noticed a drastic increase in your stutering and wondered if it had something to do with hormones.

You can't get away with your last answer saying to look at your photo with your hair short saying you are a man.

I need you to explain why you say you are expecting.

Let me pull out the crayons...I am female. If you look closely at the picture, the big head of the man is not mine. I am the woman, with my hair pulled back, kissing the big mans lips! although I do not have short hair, many women do! hope this helped!

Amy,

You said "I am expecting and have noticed a DRASTIC increase in my stuttering. I am wondering if this has anything to do with hormones. All I know this is crazy".

Amy, at first I thought you were describing the situation for your wife or girlfriend but you said " I am expecting...".

Could you explain this please, I don't see how you can be expecting a baby if you are a man?

Thanks in advance...

Amy, did you have surgery in order to have a baby?

I did not know this was possible but I guess science has advanced a lot.

With respect to your question, perhaps you are having a ual identity conflict or crisis and this is causing you a lot of anxiety and thus affecting your speech.

Or if it is not that then you are completely on your own (do you have a partner)? Normally a women or man having a baby is taken care of during the pregnancy and I would expect there to be a reduction in stress and an improvement with respect to stuttering.

Well with respect to your pregnancy we all wish you the best perhaps you are the first man to have a baby, perhaps not, but definitely one of the first men to have a baby.

Have you received any private messages from the ladies with advice.

Let us know.

hope your child has red hair, I like red hair.

this thread has turned into a nightmare!! A silly picture of me kissing Anderson Cooper, one of the most famous journalists in the world, has confused so many...anyway, I was just looking for some information, from ohter females, as to whether or not their stuttering increased during pregnancy. Since I have been pregnant, as I am FEMALE, my stuttering has increased both in intensity and frequency. GEEEEEEEEZ! This has been exhausting.

You know, I posted this thread because I was seeking help and advice, but I have received an uncallled for backlash from many men on this site. I have explained that I am female, even changed my profile picture, and the sarcasm keeps rolling in. If you dont have anything to add about my original question, of being pregnant and stuttering increasing, please dont comment on my pregnancy.

I don't really like to get involved in something that doesn't concern me but what is the reason for all this nonsense from both Bruce and Lenny regarding Amey's gender? I as a long time forum member have seen many of her posts and have aways though she was female so I don't see how you are both getting confused. If it is supposed to be some kind of joke then it isn't very funny. As I said it isn't really my business but I think you should both lay off.

I think it is possible that the comments keep on coming in because people don't really understand why you had the photo up of the man in the first place.

How would someone have known that you were the little, tiny person in the background whose lips were sought of up against this man's mouth?

I think Amey they might not understand why you did not have a photo of yourself as you have now, or none at all, of course in the first place.

I don't ask this to be as unkind as the others but is the man in the photo the father of your child, I guess that would explain it perhaps?

I agree, I can't believe what I was reading. lol

I was hoping you found it amusing though, people misunderstand often but this was on another level I guess, lol. I wish you all the best with your baby. I think with stuttering it's so much emmotional than anything else imo, so I guess even if it's worse now, better not to think about it, it comes and goes as it pleases until someone finds out why, so far science just hasn't been able to explain it.

I didn't reply sooner because this board seemed not to allow you to update for months on end. When I make a post, it took a month just to view it, and then another just to see posts replying that were from who knows when. I think this is rediculous and I probably won't see this reply posted for another month if ever, but if it does ever show up, again I just want to say I wish ya the best with your new bundle of joy.

Hi Amey,

Time to chime in here- your original question regarding hormones and pregnancy was very clear. I'd venture that the respondent's confusion may be attributed to ESL or a lack of understanding about English language euphemisms, even relatively overt ones.

This doesn't pertain directly to pregnancy, but I've noticed a definite correlation to my hormonal cycle and ease of speech. I'm 25 years old and have noticed a considerable difference in my fluency depending on my menstrual cycle, and medication via birth control. I tracked my fluency, anxiety over speaking (etc) on a daily basis in correlation to the potency of my tri-phasic birth control, and noticed a positive correlation between fluent speech and the week leading up to my period. Meaning that the week before my period I'm nearly fluent, ready to do a job interview or speak in public, and the week after my period, (when the birth control is non-existant or at a very low dosage), I'm a mess.

I mentioned this kind of correlation to a number of physicians and each was surprised, and could not offer much advice or help other than to prescribe me as much birth control as I wanted, (gee thanks). I've been looking for some documentation of a hormonal influence on fluency, (other than personal testimonies in these forums), but have yet to find a speech pathologist, general practitioner or pharmacist acknowledge the correlation.

Let me know if you've found any documentation, or if your doctor had any advice to offer.

Many thanks and best of luck!

- Jeanna

Dear Amey, Pregnancy is one of those conditions that necessitates complex hormonal and biological system to be mobilized for protection (of the mother and the fetus.) It is a state of emergency. The speech is not so critical at this time. Protection is critical. Older women in your family know that they must support you and they do not need even listen to what you have to say. So speech is not so critical.
Later when it is the time for delivery, and after that, your body will be flooded with oxytocin that will make you quite empowered to talk. Taking care of your baby will stimulate oxytocin in your brain. The important factor is that you must build you relationship with your baby based on encouragement for what you approve and blocking for what you do not approve. Punishment must not be a tool. Punishing another person (your baby) will inhibit oxytocin.
