View Full Version : A recovering stutterer
Hi, I just wanted to share my story. I have been stammering since I was three, I had speech therapy but nothing helped, I was extremely shy and became a very good covert stammerer, I avoided certain sounds like the plague, I would never say St, D's and so the list goes on, this caused me alot of problems, I chose subjects at A Levels that required less speech, jobs where I didnt have to use telephones and just lived in fear of anyone seeing me as a stammerer. But things have changed for me, and they can for you too,I have joined the Mcguire Programme, run by recovering stammerers for stammerers. It looks at the physchological and physical sides of stammerering, it has changed my life, I now feel free. It is not a cure, it requires hard work and a determination to succeed, but I can assure you it is well worth it, I walk with my head held high, I am very proud of recovering from a stammerer, If I can do it, anyone can. Thre fear of everything encompassed with it, is slowly melting away, I have a contact number for Matt Wilton, the UK South Regional Director: 0800 917 6579

hi, everything you said about avoiding words and choosing certain subjects and even your job is also true for me.
the only issue i have is, ive looked into programs like the one you mentioned, but that involves alot of practical exercises such as going out onto the street and asking complete strangers the time doesn't it?
to be honest i can easily ask people the time and things, its the whole experience that scares me, being so upfront and open about it, it would involve me initially stammering alot infront of people so i just havent managed to talk my way round to a program like that.
im rambling, but its great that its working for u.
hi, before I joined the program I was afraid of stammering, being percieved as a stammerer and your right, being upfront and open is part of your recovery, the way I saw it is how can you recover from something that you not facing. At times I could ask directions and simple questions, but as im sure you know theres times when panic sets in n that 'dreaded' stammer appears. The process does require 'street contacts' but your not thrown out into the town, without support, you are taught the technique to control your stammer and then you get opportunities to practise facing your fears. The support throughout is absolutely incredible and when you leave you get hundreds of 'Mcguire' telephone numbers who are all there for support. I didnt know anything about contacts before I went and I could have easily not done it because of the fear 'of the unknown', but facing it is very rewarding. good luck
