I have been a stutterer for 20 years ,first started when i was 18 .Have hidden this fact very successfully from everyone including my wife and 2 kids by substituting or blocking .I do alot of crosswords???? 12 months ago i decided to tackle this sentence of stuttering .So of course i tried speech therapy, she said i have no mechanical problem?? Whereto from here i asked myself ,so i devised a plan.It went like this,1 hypnotherapy 2 psychologist 3 beta blockers.Hypnotherapy was not for me, mainly because i could not relax enough to be hypnotised,so this did not work for me ,but maybe it could for others . The next step was psychology,i was told to desensetise myself ,so i started to make speeches at the local cricket club in front of 80 people ,of which i am a player and coach . This i did not have a problem with and quite enjoyed strangely enough.Desensetisation did not help me still in social situations,so after 15 visits and $1500 to my psychologist i lost interest. Next on my plan was inderal or beta blockers still no success. After visiting numerous GPs i found one who wants to help me.I found a lot of GPs,because i did not sutter in front of them did not believe me,ithink some of them thought i was looking for drugs. After 20 years of substituting or blocking you get pretty good at it .Anyway the GP who wants to help mehas put me on an anti depressant PAXIL ,this strangely helps but is not the answer .He has said we will numerous things until we find an answer .The next step is EFFEXOR.I suppose i am a human guinea pig .When i was younger i abused marijuana for 10 years, i believe this is related because i have 2 friends with a similar affliction .I will keep you posted and I WILL find an answer to this terrible affliction

I am currently on Effexor and Inderal
due to anxiety.. but it may contribute
greatly to my excess stuttering!! I'm not
allowed to stop taking it cold-turkey--if I
do, I might get very sick!!! But I will never
know if it causes excess stuttering if I'm
not allowed to go off it!!

I thought Inderal was for the prevention of migraines and/or high blood pressure! My mum's been taking this for years. Oh dear. :(

How does one completely hide a stutter from people so close, just by blocking and substituting words? I can't succeed at this at all! I change words to others but there's always SOMETHING I can't say in pretty much every single sentence.

A lot of the time I have to pause between a few words, and I don't stutter but it still doesn't sound 100% normal, which I hate.

I smoked pot a bit for a few years...I don't know if this would influence a stutter though...maybe it disconnects something in the brain or something. *shrug*

I really don't know what Inderal does-- it may
help anxiety as I said in my last post, but it
may make me stutter excessively--!!!

It's common for us to substitute words for words
we don't want to sound stuttered on..I can't remember if I ve ever substituted words-I just
stutter on them- and not be understood on the words
I am tryng to say..PI_ _ ES me off!!

I once in an effort to help my stutter stuck cotton
in my ears hoping that if I could reduce the hearing
of my voice, I would stutter less.. but it did not work--all i got was a lecture from my parents what a stupid idea it was..!

Early years, my stutter was very bad, and I just kept quite and shook my head a lot. As I got older, I too switch words with another words and act like I'm searching for the right word. I had the look and body luanage down. You can fool a lot of people, but the ones closes to you, they know, even if they don't say anything. The one person that I don't remember stuttering to, is my grandmother, who raised me.

I too smoked pot, and it improved my hearing, I could hear the bug as it walk across the ground. I was a heavy drinker, only because I though I was fluent. The loud music of a bar, masked my speech, so I had to raised my voice and I didn't stutter. I haven't thought about putting cotton in my ears.

Like the loud music that masked your speech-- I was
hoping if I stuck cotton balls in my ears it would
mask my speech but nope!!

At least I hoped it helped pulled some of that wax out of your ears when you pulled the cotton out.
