hey all, new here, my stutter has gotten a lot better since i was young, (I'm 22 now) but it still there. it is specifically frustrating because I am usually not embarrassed by it, but the times when it happens are ridiculously embarrassing.

"f" sounds are tough for me, and my phone number has a 4 in the middle of it. I can't remember the last time I didn't stutter saying my phone number.

Sometimes I even stutter my name, Peter, which has to be one of the most embarrassing things ever haha.

Has anyone overcome stutters on specific words? I assume since I've been conditioned so long to worry about stuttering in these cases, my mind is expecting me to stutter and therefore it happens.

Stutterers often find their names difficult, I find however if I have to say mine for a while (when starting somewhere new for example) it becomes easier. If I'm asked out of the blue though it's an issue :s Words which are difficult for me normally have the same sounds. For example street, stream etc. Also ages' are an odd one. I found the teens easier to say than the twenties, maybe because the emphasis' afterwards as apposed to before? EG: FourTEEN > TWENTY whatever

I stutter on any words that start with p and r a lot. I seem to have no troubles with vowels in most instances, though I just stutter with any word and every word on a bad day. "potato" is almost impossible for me to say when talking to people or ordering food in a restaurant. "sweet potato" makes it even harder and has become the most difficult phase for me, along with the word "remember," which nine times out of ten I will block on. Alone I can speak any word.

lol i stutter really bad on my last name...or numbers like seven, or zero, eh and my mother's and father's first names. i use replacementism, its a term i made up, say like im trying to say my last name: i just say "L" or use my middle name...hell some cant even say the word "stutter", or the word "speech impediment". so i say "i repitate my speech" and thats as far as i go into it. i hold up numbers i cant say with my fingers. with words you cannot say just find a way to say the same point with minimal stuttering, if its unavoidable, these situations i hate, i usually say "look im going to 'trip' really bad if i continue...so just dont ask right now"...cause usually after some thinking i can get the word out clean and clear. so not really "overcoming" but the shorcuts are nice and having them builds confidence.

He there :-) On of the ways I increased my fluency significantly on certain sounds and words was voluntarily stuttering on r's, but mostly practicing continuous phonation on R sounds on vowel sounds. Example:

Slowly practice saying:

Rah, Rah, Rah, Rah, Rah, Rah, Rah, Rah, Rah, Rah
Ree, Ree, Ree, Ree, Ree, Ree, Ree, Ree, Ree, Ree,
Rai, Rai, Rai, Rai, Rai, Rai, Rai, Rai, Rai, Rai,
Row, Row, Row, Row, Row, Row, Row, Row, Row Row,
Ruu, Ruu, Ruu, Ruu, Ruu, Ruu, Ruu, Ruu, Ruu, Ruu,

Yea, just practice that kind of thing every day to start noticing differences of the trouble you have on that consonant. :)

Yea im the same way, i have problems saying words that start with S or Sp words. I have stuttering saying my phone number also, my best advice for that is take a deep breath and saying each number clearing and dont try to rush through it.

Try not biting down at all, if you do in S words. And if you don't bite, bring your teeth to the threshold of closeness for you to be able to produce the S sound. Less tension always helps! :-D

I have trouble with C or K sounds.. which is horrible since my name is Caitlin. Also the number 8 is horrible for me. and some D sounds. I use a lot of word replacement, and will add words in front of things I'm trying to say- if you get what i mean?

Like most of you, I have trouble saying my name. First and Last. Why is that most of us can't even say our own names? Makes it almost impossible to make an appointment, pick up a prescription, make a reservation, etc. I have trouble with words beginning with the letters w, b, r, s.. Sometimes f, t, and m. Hell, almost all of them. Great..

Mine is the letter "M" which is the first letter of my name, my daughter's name, and my wife's name. The other day someone asked my wife's name and I had a block. It took me a few seconds to get it out and then I fretted over that the rest of the day. I also have trouble with words beginning with "H" which is why I hate answering the phone. I have actually just hung up the phone before because I could not get the word "Hello" out.

Most times it's the letters M & S. it's hard to say my name which is "difficult" (Keviette, I hardly uses it) in itself. When I get a block & try to rush thru it it sounds like "CVS" lol. My name is always mispronounced. It funny when I have to attend meetings for my firehouse & we have to stand up & say our name as well as our firehouse name. Alotta people there know my first & last name & know I'm "The Chick from Seat Pleasant" but when I stand up I say, "Im Charmaine Davis from 8"

I am 22 years old also. My boyfriends name is Peter too! LOL and I stutter on his name!! Only his name though, not mine. Which is so annoying because when I want to tell someone a story about him, "Peter" can't be the first word of my story. I have to say something like "Me and Peter..." If I say the word Peter in the middle of the sentence I don't stutter on it, but if I say it in the beginning-I stutter. Weird huh?

I stutter on the W questions. Where When What. And on the A words. anyone anywhere anything. I haven't really overcome my stuttering on these words because I'm too embarrassed to try. I've heard if you elongate the word it will it to come out smoother. "aaaaaanyone" "wwhhhhhere" But I'm not sure if it works? LOL

The most difficult words to say for me at the moment are any that begin with vowels. I also stuggle with words that begin with R such as 'remember' for example.

My name is the worst word in the world - not because of the word itself but because of the anxiety I feel when asked what my name is. I struggle on words I can't avoid, names, numbers, addresses etc. I honestly believe this for me is an anxiety issue - I stutter at my worst on words I can't avoid. I don't think stuttering is "all in my head" as some people like to tell me - however I do feel that my anxiety in relation to names etc makes these words so difficult.

I do often us "my name is.." to try to help urge the word out - I am aware I often sound like an idiot when I do that but sometimes its less stressful then then stutter.

Annoyingly enough the word I struggle with the most is "stutter". Not the best word when you have one!

I am 23, and its really hard for me to say words starting with VOWELS. so when i see one, i started to fear it. and then i stutter more. and i stutter more in english than in my local/native language. but in school and getting a job we need to equip ourselves with english power. so its a bit hard for me and i am really struggling right now...

back in 4th year highschool i overcome stuttering situations because my english teacher is forcing us to do recitations everyday, discussing in front of the class everyday and by doing that i became comfortable with my way of speaking.
then on my college days where i dont know anyone, i started to fear to stutter and thinking if i do they all laugh at me..=( and it started again, i started to the fear os speaking again. and now i am on a job hunt, my stutter becomes worst. (of all times!)
but i am trying to conquer my fear, as my bf always telling me, "think positive! and just dont hella care about what people will think of you, just move forward."
and his name is alvin, thats why when people asking for his name i would just say vin. hahaha.

Yeah I can't even say my own name when people ask for it, take like 5 seconds which makes everyone think I forgot it or something.... horrific experience.

I always stutter badly on my name as the first and last both have quite harsh letters, A and T, which make it annoying, also Biology (I study it at sixt form)

Mine has always been "S" along with B, P, D, G. My first name starts with the letter S along with my husbands! If I can get other people to introduce me I'm normally okay, but If I have to say my name or repeat it....
