hey guys,
I am a "closet stutter". Through changing words in my head to avoid blocks or through just not talking I avoid stuttering almost all of the time. currently im finishing my second year of college and i am thinking about taking some time off (either 1 semester or 2) from school and devoting myself to relearning speech. I have heard from many people that going to intensive programs to relearn to talk will fix the problem for a short time but most people relapse after a few months and end up worse off and more depressed than when they started. I am looking for direction and any insight in how to attack this problem. Thank you for your help.

That's the reason I am on the medications
Efexor and Inderal!!

I was started on it because of the depression and anxiety that was cuased by my severe
depression that hit me ever since I had that relapse
from the Starbuck Fluency Clinic in Geneseo, NY...

What is that you ask?? Just another clone
of the precision fluency program and hollins thing!!!

I have not been to Hollins or done
the Precision Fluency Program, but I can
almost bet it's exactly what the Starbuck
Clinic entails- relearning to talk, and fluency
shaping and such-- and these programs give us
these 4 months of fluency freedom, and then
we get hit by a ton of bricks when we relapse one day--

It's like a slap in the face--these programs
are pipe dreams-- they give you fluency- then the
stuttering comes back worse then before you went
when you relapse!!

I bet a lot of our anger stems from the fact that these courses have failed us in the long run!!

Had I known I would relapse- I would have never taken the 4 week course--!!

Be wary of these programs that give
you intense fluency, and then leave you
relapsing!!

My advice-- get an anti-stutter device- and USE IT
ALONG SIDE STUTTERING SPEECH THERAPY--

DO NOT GO TO SPEECH THEARPY WITHOUT
A ANTI-STUTTER AID TO HELP YOU!!!

Hi Thebirdman001,

I was once a "Closet Stutter" like you and It too crossed my mind about relearning how to speak. I still have problems pronounce certain words. The one think that helped me get out of the closet. I changed my attitude. Other people are so worried about their own worlds, that many don't see yours. Many people will take you at face value and you can hide your stutter from them, but true friends will look beyond what you show the world. I have a few friends that could blackmail me if they really want too. There is so much going on out there, I felt I was missing out on. It didn't happen over night, but I started taking chances and I met my wife this way. The fear started to disappear, or it went into hiding, because it is scared. I hope this makes you think, because it really help me. Today I do anything I want and recently at a auto show. I met this guy, he works as an announcer for Chrysler Canada. He goes up on stage and tells the crowd about new vehicles and what they can do. The guy stutters. Maybe I am not on that stage yet, but I know I can make it happen if I wanted too.

Look i took one of those intensive programs i don't know anyone who is worse off after taking the course but i think i know what ur talking about most people releapse it a part of life but if u use the method learnt 100% of the time the releapse will last a very short time i took my first course over a year now sure i'm not cured but i'm taking the steps to get there. the poeple that are looking for a quick fix need to understand there is NO QUICK FIX if you put in the work u can control the stutter with the breathing and other parts of the course the people that ended up worst than they started are the ones looking for a quick fix and don't put in the work need to overcome this problem they will continue to slip back into there holes til the learn nothing in life is just give to u we need to work hard if we want to over come this. if your looking for a course then i suggest the Mcguire Programme i took it it has worked wonders for me. the website is www.Mcguireprogramme.com i would recommend it to all those people that are really looking for help and not a quick fix
