View Full Version : the embarassment thread
ok thought this would be interesting point of discussion to be comfortable with ourselves by posting one of our most embarassing moments as a result of having a stutter. The first one for me that springs to mind is last year when i told a girl outside a club who i was interested in that i needed to talk to her then preceeded to say virtually nothing because i couldn't articulate what i wanted to say...
feel free to share similar experiences and i will think of some more interesting and humourus ones of my own...

well Igby, I am 37 years old and have loads and loads, but here are one or two.
I went to a local fish and chip shop and I wanted to ask for a portion of chips but struggled really bad on the word portion, well after what seemed like a lifetime but was only 2 minutes I got out the whole sentence and was served with fish and chips, I didnt have the time or confidence to say that I was served the wrong food.
Another one, I was asked by my brother to go to the library and get a book on paranormal activity, well I walked into the library and asked the librarian for books on paranormal without stuttering and what does she say, sorry what did you say, well that was me done in, after 5 minutes of trying to get the word paranormal out and being stared at by a lot of the library I walked out.
Now that I am older I try to make humour out of my stutter and dont really care what people who dont know think of me.

Well, I have a few years on bignick. It was the day I was getting married, and my mind was not on my stutter, the night before It was all I could think about. WEll, I was flawless, because I was repeating words spoken to me, but when it came to my wife. Instead of calling me her lawful husband, she called me her Awful husband. She put her face in her hands and all the friends and family were just cracking up. We have that picture of her after she said those words. Here I was worried I was going to embarrass myself.

i like you all have many of these.
The most recent and probably one of teh worst was when i was working on a saturday night (second job) in a bar. Some girls came up to teh bar and asked what drinks were cheap.... There i was, stuck! I was trying to say, 'your best bet would be having tails'.... well i was fluent right up till the word tails and thats where is got embarressing lol, i said, 'your best be would be having .................tails' not good, they just looked at me as i got redder and redder lol, lucky tho they took it lightly and carred on.. but inside i could of died on the spot... talk about bad timing on blocking up!

I'm surprised you did not get slapped!!
I know you were trying to say "tail", but if
a stutterer gets stuck on the word tail--
they might think your trying to say which
a girl would find offensive and slap one!! That is
a dirty filthy word!!!
"tail" is a word stutterers should
be carefull using -

My dad who has a stutter went to a fancy dress party once and went dressed in country and western, when asked what he was he got stuck on the 1st part of country. Work it out for yourself and now that is embarrassing. he still laughs about it now.

lol bignick, that is mate.
happy7117, i know it was embarressing but they were ok about it.... i told them that i had a stammer and they were quite nice actually :)
Worst thing i could of said but that bar is so busy i hardly get time to think about my speach so i dont stammer, this was a rare occassion when it wasnt busy and was fairly quiet :( never the less, it all worked out well in the end :D
(please take this light-hearted), but if we had video'd our funny moments, we could all of been rich through jeromy beadle. Dont get me wrong mind you, there are times when you block up and its really not funny atall, like in a university presentation (thats being video'd) or when youre ordering food and the cue behind you are getting restless...
All the best

I think it's better if a person warns someone if they do stutter--as you said!!
So if one does get into a situation like this, they
will be cool with it, and it will not seem as
embarrasing!!

God it makes me cringe reading these posts, its not pity, but i guess i just feel sorry for what we all go through at times because of our stammer.
Mine would have to be a university group presentation.
The other 3 people in my group had no idea i stammered cos i hid it so well, but on the day during the presentation i practically blocked on every other word, i think its the most i ever stammered. ever.
I just felt guilty cos we probably got a lower grade than we should have and im sure it was partly my fault..

strangely,i'm the type thats fine in front of crowds of people,as in a presentation.i guess i'm "super nervous" about saying the right things more than i'm worried about saying them wrong.
its only 1 on 1 and in small groups that i'm hopeless, the telephone as well.
its odd that i've got to be petrified to not do it,perhaps i should employ an entourage to keep me on my toes, hmm? :D

first day of seventh grade I walked in late for homeroom and the teacher asked me my name and I couldn't get it out, period. After about 2 minutes of awkwardness consisting my me blocking he finally showed me the attendance list and I pointed out my name. It really sucked.
Something similiar happened in a formal debate one year later. It wa timed however, 45 seconds a statement and I got out about a sentence which wasn't close to intelligent. I received a C- since I dressed up. It just makes you feel so alienated.
