Hello people, i am a young black male from Suffolk , Va. I stuttered all of my life. And it really makes me sad I still do it at the age of 27. When I was younger kids used to make fun and laugh at me in the classroom or in the hallways. I even thought about dropping out school so the teacher wouldnt call on me to read. In class I receive bad grades on well done school projects because I did not present them in front of the students. Even in the present day I catch hell at work and withe men call me retarded black man. The funny part about it my friends and family do not see it as a turn at all to the females. Why i dont know. I wish they can understand that females and other races do not treat you like a man or take you seriously if you stutter. I make decent money , wear nice clothes and drive a nice car but I turn woman off because I can talk. I never had a girlfriend or had , im too ashamed to talk to a woman. Sometimes I think about suicide but I dont have the balls to do it. I wish I never was born!!!!!!!!

No, no god does not hurt you, he has given you a gift of stuttering so that you can learn the lessons in life he wants you to learn and become the wonderful person he wants you to become to do his bidding in the world.

Yeah, okay, it s. Your story strikes a chord with everyone on these forums. You're not alone in that regard; we all have a stutter. However, our speech is just one of the many cards we've been handed. You can't change your cards. What defines you, however, is what you do with those cards. You have the free will (since you believe in God, right? :) ) to pity yourself, and further perpetuate your unfavourable circumstances. Alternatively, you can take the actions you truly want to regardless of what those around you (who sound mostly like heads by the way) expect or want you to do. There are heaps of people in this world who see past stuttering. It's YOUR job as a stutterer to find them. Now, it's not always an easy task. But succumbing to the pressure of those who can't see past the stuttering and getting depressed and giving up is accepting your failure in that task. And that's accepting a life of a quality far below that which you might realise. And that should be shameful to anyone.

I don't think the story is that since one believes in GOd then one has free will, the story is supposed to be that God gave you free will whether you believe in him or her or it or not!!

Yeah you can find people who will look past your stuttering(hopefully this means you are not being ignored) but that helps your speech up to a point.

The point is that how does one not stutter and not sound like a robot or speaking very slowly or just obvously doing something unusual with your speech and not draw attention to your speech like your stuttering did in the first place!!!

Probably the best bet is the Hollins program and being able to accept that you talk slowly and accepting that in yourself when talking with other people.

anyone out there take the Hollins program and can confirm the slowness problem????????

I guess that those who believe in a god are always thanking god for the good things in life that happen so I've always wondered why they don't blame god for the bad things as well. God is supposed to be all knowing and all powerful right? So if you believe in a omnipotent god yes he is punishing you with stuttering and all other things not perfect in the world.

Don't take this personally, but your comment is stupid. Stuttering has made me lose faith in God completely and I refuse to do the bidding of a sadistic God.

I feel the same way a lot of times.
I wonder why me?
Why can't I be normal?
I feel like my heart breaks everytime I open my mouth.
Don't give up though.
Try the McGuire Program, Hollins, NLP, hypnosis, just try everything you can think of.
This is what I'm doing and it's what gives me hope, strength and the will to keep living.
Also I can't help but keep mentioning the importance of not repressing your emotions.
Go to a quiet place and write down how you feel. Every little thing. Cry, scream, just let it all out! This makes me feel so much better. It's better than carrying these emotions with me like a lump in my throat.

For your information I do not see stuttering as a psychopathology or psychological anything. We stutter because we have just rough inhibitions and in wrong places and we are used to fighting with them as they are everywhere. Toddlers are careful when they walk. They get blocked by a small objects in front of them. They get frozen and tumble if no one is holding their hands or no spoon is placed in their grips.

Let me tell you a bit about my story briefly.

A good friend of mine introduced me to a girl when I was 18 years old. By that time, I had never answered phone in my life (for which I still blame my irresponsible parents partly) and I had a new girl friend with whom I had to talk on the phone. So, I had enormous pressure but I resisted it and finally became more fluent when speaking to her.

So, having a girl friend has always helped my stuttering and I'm sure it would do for you too.

So, go for it - be brave, be confident and focus on the other assets of yours (e.g. intelligence, knowledge, look, etc) - doesn't matter if you fail, stand up and try again you will surely succeed.
