I've heard that the unemployment rate among stutterers is high.
Maybe around 25%.
Not sure if thats true but it would be no surprise considering what we face everyday.
Having been out of work for a long time now,I've had to move in with my parents with my which at my age is an embarrasment.
Having to cope with my stutter and all this has overwhelmed me.
Its a one/two punch to my psyche
I imagine there are others facing the same problem. Anyone had success finding work. Just hearing that somebody can overcome the dreaded job interview process would be encouraging.
Thanks for listening.

My bet is it higher than that, and even higher that stutterers take menial jobs even though they are intelligent. But even a menial job is better than no job at all. I have had a few jobs, but most of my life I have been self employed.
So my advice to you is do one of 2 things, if possible create your own job, everyone has some skill or interest. For instance on and off in my life I pick up used tires and wholsale sale them to used tire stores. I do that right now.
At another point in my life, never ever holding a gun in my hand, I bought some laser sights, holsters and night vision and made a living working Gunshows for 5 years. I also buy old Schwinn bikes fix them and sell them making a few bucks from that. There are many things like that you could try. Depends on your interests and skills.
Second you could go to the OHIO Vocational Rehabilition Department and see a counsler, they will evaluate you and give you some help. Maybe pay to train you for a job, help you get money to go back to school and after help you and coach you on to find a job.
One thing is for sure, there is no dead end, you might not make a million dollars but there is always a way earn enough money to make a living.

Thanks Howee for the info. you're right a menial job is better than no job and right now I've had to settle for a minimum wage job after all this time.I'm going to focus on improving my skills and maybe see about self employment.that would be new to me.

I haven't started looking for a job because I recently graduated and I'm taking a break, but I hope I have success. I'll share my experiences with you guys after I start going on interviews. My disorder is a little different than stuttering, but my speech will probably affect the interview process the same way it would affect you guys.

I am fortunate enough to be an only child and be able to study because my parents have helped me out... the reality is people think we are mentally handicapped and... POSSESSED BY THE DEVIL. I'm kidding, but it is harder. It's better if you come straight out in a job interview in the first block you have and tell the interviewer "oh and yes, I have a stutter" and keep on talking. doesn't guarantee anything but it's better to get some sympathy for it than to let them wonder what that was all about.

hello:
I have stutter since 10 years, and I graduate from faculty of nursing as first class and the faculty select me to work as teaching assistant, and you what that mean to one has stuttering but with my effort i overcome stuttering especialy during lectures, i do training in my home before going to lecture and i speack very well during lecture but stuttering back in out of lecture!!
So I think the stuttering not big obstacle for work, just you need for some effort to train yourself to speak what u expect to speack during your work.

I am currently applying for a job. its my first time actually. i just graduated from college.
i had my first interview last week, it doesnt go well, but i was just ask some personal info after taking a written exam. tomorrow will be my second interview and it will be hell for me tomorrow. i know what will i answer( in my thoughts) but im not sure if i can say it all. like what happened to my first interview, i never said all the things i wanted to say to the interviewer. i wish tomorrow i can relax myself and talk to the interviewer.
I stutter more when i am thinking that i will stutter, and when I am thinking that this person will think that i am a weird girl. something like that. i stutter more coz i became afraid.
but in my on-the-job training back in college, it was just a casual interview so i did well. then getting friendly/ communicating with my colleges is easy too.
now is a formal interview maybe thats why i am scared. so i stutter. and there are other people whose there with me while i was being ask thats why i was more embarrass..
it is difficult for me bec. here in our country, there are less people who stutter so it is not widely known, thats why people just thought that i was stuttering bec. i was a kid, but then when i became adult they were curious why i did not overcome it. esp. my relatives. well how? if they keep mocking me and laughing at me.. they dont understand me... =((

Yes in my town you need to know both English and Spanish.... I can barely speak English due to my stutter.

There is just no way you are going to last long if you are trying to work somewhere that requires a lot of talking (sales associate, anything with business and marketing). I was planning on majoring in business but changed my major to IT because business requires speaking publicly and i couldn't even imagine doing that.
