I posted a message in november about the day
I went to get a haircut and the barbe made fun of me...well that was over and forgotten shortly after..
Well yesterday-- I went to the same place
becaue it's the only place in my town that does
haircuts and they charge a fair price- $10...
I got my haircut from a different gent
who worked there who was wicked nice too--
I literaly could not talk--absolutley horrible--
I'm not blowing this up either...
I tried to have informal chat with him as any barber would, and nothing was coming out right...
So like the previous haircut with the other gent-- this
guy started snickering..the other guy was making
fun of me, but this guy was lauging at me....
I guess he found the stuttering hilarious...
After I left-- and after all these unsuccessfull therapies I tried- and ridicules- I told myself--
this is the last straw..
I don't know what the hell keeps me going...
The only thing that will help me is not
regular speech therapy--but a stuttering device--
I cannot afford a device which actualy is my only
option- because no matter how much I practice the therapy strategies outside the therapy room--
they will not work,,,
I need an auditory feedback device--I have barely
enough money to afford one..
My anger to these people who sell
these helpfull aids for us for a couple
thou--?? I have deep hatred for them at the
fact that they charge a couple thousand dollars
for extreme stuttering people like me where
a device would be the only way out--and some of us
don't have a couple thousand--- and they don't know how desperate we can become when we cannot afford it...!!
These device sellers who sell these aids for a couple thousand dollars have no compassion or empathy
for those people who stutter nastily but cannot afford one of their thousand dollar devices.....
All they care about is the money they can make..
and not how bad a nasty stutterer needs one.I
wonder if they actualy consider giving away a device
to those who cannot afford one- but desperately need one...??
Have they ever thought the reason why we stutterers
don't buy from them is cause it's a couple thousand
they some people cannot afford????
Sure we all need to make money, but extreme stutterers who cannot afford a stutter aid--
should be charged not in the thousands but in the
hundreds range...or free...
Extreme stutteres have to live in anger not being able to afford a device which could take a tremendous
burden off them....makes me fell bad or all of us
nasty stutterers who have to live through this
sort of hell.....
Sorry if I sound negative-- but I
need to vent- because I got ignored
alot today when I was not understood,
and it just makes feel better when I can let my
fury out on this forum!!!
Also I need to get even with that barber guy somehow...!!!
Maybe I'll just not tip him anymore!!!!

Adam, your allowed and I understand. You need to find an different barber. There must be some collage student who has an ad in your local newspaper or something. Maybe you mistook their laughter as a nervous laugh. Good luck and hang in there.
i sympathise with you, we have all been threw this kind of thing before and will still come across a few idiot/immature ppl.
thats how life is and its hard i know.
dont let this effect you and you know you are better than them scum at the barbers.

:D  Wierd thing is with anyone else, this guy
would not be scum to them because the stuttering
would not be heard for the barber to laugh at
Or if a person does not stutter-the
other person does not have anything
to laugh at..
So should we say that every person who laughs
at us stutterers would be scum...when the same person is being wicked kind to those who do not stutter???
The average person would treat another one
with respect and kindness, but that same person might laugh at the stutterer---so it's not the perosn
who is the scum for laughing at us if we stutterer,
but it's the stutter that causes the very kind
person to laugh at us...
The barber is definately not scum because he is a wicked great guy to anyone and everyone-- but to laugh at my stutter--it's the stuttering that triggers
the laughter....if we did not stutter--would the barber still be a scumbag...even if he's great to everyone
else??
I don't think laughing at the stuttering makes
the barber a mean and insensative person-- but
I think that the fact that stuttering sounds
weird and totaly unusual from a person would make them laugh...
If every person in the world made fun of us
stutterers, would that make them scumbags???
And if those same people who were scum to us
treated non-stutters with respect and kindness
because they did not stutter, would they still look
like scum to us??
It's like the average person gets treated with kindness
and respect, while the stutterer gets laughed at??
Sorry if this post is confusing- I am not sure how to explain it---
It's like an average non-stutterer
does not get mocked because he does not stutter...
But a stutterer does get mocked because he does stutter-- no matter how nice the other person is
to non-stutterers, the stutterer might still be mocked
by that person....
People don't laugh at us---- but they rather laugh at the stuttering that we do and that we just can't control...this is confusing and heavy...!!!
If we did not stutter-- we would not be laughed at of course...!!
Sorry if the above sounds repetitive-- I am writing my thoughts as they come----!! The more I think about a situation stuttering related, the more I like to add to my post--making it longer!!

i undestand your feelings as we all feel the same way when we come across people like this.even i feel extremely bad when somebody laughs at me just because i stutter.i really dont understand how can some people be so insensitive, may be they dont understand how bad we feel about that.i think the best way is to ignore it,i know its not easy but surely not impossible.

Unaware and uninformed with nervous snickers
could explain it also!!!
This forum is here for us to support each other
and vent!!! It's a great channel to vent our anger about stuttering indeed!!! :)

Adam, I hear you. here is another way of looking at it. With your stutter, you exposed a wolf in sheep clothes. Those are the kind of people you don't want to turn your back on. Well, hang in there.

That sounds like a metaphor to me--and a good
one too-- it's a way to compare our stuttering
without using "as" or "like"...
Could you explain what a wolf in sheep clothes is...??
Our stuttering is heavy thunder to ruin
a bright blue sky!!!
Our stutttering is like a road with many
obstructions--- the obstructions like
cones or low bridges we see in roads at times, is like
repititions and false starts in stuttering!!
And yes I stunk in English class-- so I don't know if
the above is actualy are metaphors or not!!

Adam,
First things first . . . F@*K 'em all!!! Now, with that said; you are a better person than they (or anyone who mocks us) will ever be. I will tell you straight up (and it is the first time I mention it in this forum, I hope it does not change the way you all feel about me) I am agnostic therefore I will not give you the "it's all god's will" speech. What I will share with you is that what comes around goes around and he also will have his day.
In regards to the device and its incredibly ridiculous price. Have you ever tried writing a letter exposing your situation (and your heart) and sending it to the folks who sell these devices? I don't know if it would work, but it is worth the try. You won’t loose anything but the paper and ink you use to write it.
In the letter you can tell tem who you are, give them a few background information of events that have happened to you (such as the incident with the barber), tell them you can't afford the device but you would like to be considered as a volunteer for any future trials or, better yet, if they do charitable donations.
I hope you get up quickly from the severe blow you suffered at that you put it all way behind you as you move forward.

Those companies may defeat me, but I will never be knocked out!!!
And as for the barber- I just will not tip him-end
of story---I cannot run from assholes-- but I have to stand up to them..
Ever thought of motivational speaking!!!
You write powerfull posts with a very tough
as nails approach!!
i dont have many hair left on my head(balding)
so no need for me to visit the barbers.
i have mine done at home. D.I.Y

A simple solution to avoid the barber is
to go bald-- meaning cut off all
one's hair!!

Thanks for the compliment. I have thought about doing motivational speaking when I retire from the Army (in about three years). I might not do it as a full time gig, but as an occasional engagement at local schools or group therapy functions to help guide today’s youth (both those who do and those who don’t stutter). I have come a long way and I think I owe it to the to aid others in doing so as well.
Thanks again!!!
I think the army gives a person that tough-
as- nails approach..

You can't blame these sellers on the predatory prices. Sorry, just it's basic economics. I don't think I hav to lecture you on this. If there was a surplus and they were convenient to make they'd be sold to less. The reason they can't just hand them out is because the industry would collapse, the production price must he high.
Anyways, there's people like that, I get angry too. It's a natural reaction...I don't know what else to say. It sucks.

So I guess they care more about making money,
than helping those who realy truly need it!!!
I would like to know what would happen if those
that sell these devices stuttered very badly themselves, and needed a device, but could not
get one because of money!!!
Maybe if the device sellers could step in our shoes
as a very bad stutterer, and if they could be rejected for a device they could not afford, they would know how we feel....!!
It's all about money-- if people don't have money
they get nothing...and for stutterers that is
devestating...

It's not about being mean, if they can't make a profit there will be no more SpeechEasy's or Fleuncy Master's. Production costs seem high, the market is small, and gradually I would figure due to better technology it will become cheaper. But nevermind the devices, I'm psyched for the pagoclone. The speecheasy hardly worked for me. The owners need to invest their time and money into the production of these devices and if they could lower prices it would certainly be in their best interest (but they can't make them artificially low). You think the owners want to sell ridiculously high prices? Lower prices mean more people can afford or which means more money. Things are more in demand at lower prices.

Lower prices mean more people can buy the product
cause they can afford it...so the company will make more money!!
That's a great point!!
I would do anything to quit my current meds which
are Inderal and Effexor, and go on Pagaclone...!!

I haven't been to a barber in years, I let my hair grow long and I keep it in a pony tail. When I did, I usually got women and I kept my same hair style for years.
Adam you have demonstrated your strenght by going back to the same barber time after time. Going back to the same resturant time after time. Not losing total control and take someone's head off. You have my respect.

it sucks that that happened to you..i can't imagine what that would feel like. best thing to do is either find a new barber or simply cut your own hair as i do..i've never even been to a barber in my life! those people there just plain suck.

Been there.... Sucks BIG TIME. Man, my OWN family would make fun of me and laugh( can you say "permanently screwed up?")
I've never really discussed this stuff with another human being ( outside of the speech therapist in 1st-2nd grade) before so I dont know what more to say except, I feel for you dude.

i do feel for you mate, i think we have all been there - getting laughed at and ridiculed, i really dont know what reasonable advice i could give you, but from my experience people think that we are cowards as well as stutters, might not be the smartest thing to do but it worked for me, you should give him a piece of your mind and if that means a knuckle sandwich so be it
