Shit I keep turning down invitations to parties/social gatherings because my friend always brings this STUPID game to the party called Taboo. Everyone is forced to play it.

If anyone here has played it, they will know that it is a stutterer's nightmare. Basically the game requires you to speak as fast as possible, to describe a word to your teammates to get them to guess the word. It gets worse, there is a list of "taboo" (forbidden) words listed which may not be spoken, so I can't even avoid/substitute words. Not only that, but theres a time limit, so I'm also rushed to speak.

For example, the giver might have to get his or her team to say "baseball" without saying "sport," "game," "pastime," "hitter," "pitcher," nor "baseball." The giver may only use speech to prompt her teammates; gestures or drawings are not allowed.

I always get super stressed out when playing this game, and it's just f**kin embarassing to be stuck on a word while everyone is looking at you struggle while your team depends on you.

Every year during Christmas, my family members all want to play that stupid in game.

I hope someone finds a cure for stuttering before I die, I'm tired of the blocking shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I played that game in seventh grade, it isn't really that bad around people who are your friends....I know it's hard as a stutterer, but I would only be nervous if there was someone there I wanted to impress.

I have never heard of Taboo!! Besides, I'm
not much of a board game fan!! I love
computer games!!! You always have the
choice not to play Taboo if you don't want!!
Just sit-in and watch!!! If you don't really enjoy
something- sit out and watch!!

Sound very unfun for a stutter person!!

It even sounds very fun for a non-stutterer!!

Having to describe something while not being able
to give specific obvious clues about that something away sounds very frusteratin to anyone!!

Especilay being rushed to do it-- and with a time
limit!!!

It's bound to give any person headaches!!

Just don't play it, play something else that is
not verbaly stressfull or rushed-- Pictionary,
Scrabble etc...

For children--play young Chutes and Ladders, Candy Land!! I used to play Chutes and Ladders--not only
very fun -- but required no speaking-- just a roll
of a little spinner!!

Never played Pictionary or Scrabble but I do know
of them!!!

Good friends willl let you enjoy yourself while playing a board game--they will cater to a stutterer needs,
and the rules for Taboo may have to be modified
by those who play- as long as they can all agree on the rules!!

In other words the game Taboo should be Tabood!!!

I have not played Charades in years!!

There are indeed many games that can
be played by stutterers that are very fun
and don't require verbal competition!!

Love reading these posts!!

My sentiments exactly!! No one can make you play
something you don't want to!! Just say "no thanks,
but I'd love to watch!!"!!

I have not played that game before. Just tell them you don't want to play and I am sure you will get a few more to join you and observe. The one game I was forced to play, well I shouldn't say that, was spin the bottle and that person will have to do something. I joined because the other guys got to kiss the girls and I wanted in on the action.

My brother loves playing Monopoly, he is very agressive player. I have the Risk game, can't find any players. I play Chess, and nobody wants to play. When I was in the bush camps, we played a lot of cribe and got real good at it.

I would just go and mingle and have a good time. Forget about that stupid game and i would make sure I would let your friend know that the next time, he picks you up.
