Hello everyone..I'm new to this forum, but I would like to jump in and contribute!
My name is Patrick and I've stuttered since I was around 6. I've gone through mild, moderate and severe stuttering. At times I could not answer the phone, raise my hand in class, or order what I wanted off the menu. At times I would just get so depressed that I couldn't say the things I wanted to say and that if I could only say them my life could be so much better.
I am 20 years old now, and these past several years I have made significant improvements in my stuttering. It started with an attitude change. Instead of looking at stuttering as an iron grip against which I try to struggle and break out of, I now approach stuttering with a curious attitude in which I want to learn more about it.
Now I have volunteered to do readings at church, become the President of an Entrepreneurship club, and a leader in campus ministry at my college. I started my own small computer repair corporation. I make and answer phone calls. I love leading the discussions in class and I enjoy being in social situations.
There are times when my throat gets all knotted up and I feel I can't say anything. But now I approach these times as an opportunity..an opportunity to learn more about my self.
I think the stuttering problem affects the mind, body and spirit and if we're going to get over it, we need to look at how it affects each one.
Because it affects everyone in such a personal and unique way, I don't have a very high confidence in ready made therapy programs. I think individual and one on one personalized attention is best.
Therefore, I would love to extend myself to anyone on this forum who is interested. I would love to talk over the phone with anyone who wants to and I think together we can discover more about our stuttering.
I live in the USA on the East Coast. Just PM me and I'll give you my phone number or you can give me yours. Let's do this 1 on 1!
