I have been reading through the book "The 7 habits of highly effective people" recently. The first habit mentioned is being proactive. Of course it is self-explanatory.

I don't know how to be proactive when you are stuttering. Should we be proactive towards stuttering and try to control it or be proactive towards our perception of it?? How should one take the initiative with something like stuttering??

I know my stutter is there, so I don't worry about it. I'm all business and the impression I get from the room that people respect that. I substitue words all the time and fluent people do it all the time too.
