View Full Version : Has anyone wanted to physical hurt themselves because of the pain of stuttering??

I know this may be touchy but, have you ever wanted to purposely inflict physical pain on yourself cause you could not deal with the stuttering???
I am thankful to say, I never have--but there was a time a few years ago when I was so upset and angry about how I sounded that for fun I wanted to drink some Clorox to see if the hurt from the Clorox would be greater that the hurt the stutter caused me...
I thought "it's just liquid, think of it as water, and tough it out, but nothing could be bad as being virtualy unable to speak!"
At times I think about that day and wonder what would have happened had I followed through with what I was thinking about doing???
BTW- this was when I was extremely mad and annoyed about my stutter...I thought about taking the easy road out, poisioning which refers to the above post about Clorox....
Clorox was the physical pain while stuttering was the mental and social pain I was enduring...
Sorry if this is a touchy and steep subject but it had to be let out!!

I have known a couple of people who used to cut themselves when they felt really bad. But they were at no means people who stuttered. It is a well known fact that some people tend to do that when they are suffering from unbearable mental distress.
Inflicting pain on themselves compensates for the mental suffering. I do think, that, as these people I was talking about also had the tendency to do alot of drugs and such, they might have been used to run away from whatever problems were brought upon them. And running away from them instead of learning how to face them, makes problems unbearable to digest.
One could argue that stuttering has a simular structure. Repeatingly avoiding difficult words/situations etc. makes them impossible to deal with over time.
Either ways, it can become rather tricky/hard. But then,... we all know that ;-)
Cheers
Jan

I'm a big Wuss, don't like physical pain. The only rage I felt was against other people and the few times I lashed out, I felt even worse for hurting other people or my dogs.
Maybe when I was young, I didn't have thoughts of drinking bleach, but when I was out hunting. I though, it would be so easy just to pull the trigger, but that though would only last a second or two. I was so scared, that the will for life just took over. I have always knew deep in my heart, my time will come, i just have to be patient.

Or have the bullet kill NOT A PERSON but the stuttering part of THE PERSON!!
It would be neat to have a stuttering gun, that when one pulled the trigger it could destroy the stuttering and not the person!!
BTW, I hate guns but I thought I would use that idea in responding to what your post said!!
If guns could kill stuttering and not the person, I would buy one!!
But in reality guns take lives- and I just hate em!!

Yes the gun is the most used tool, in taking any life. I would perfer that I unplug my stutter or switch it off and the disable the switch.

Isnt the stuttering part of you, so if the stuttering part of you dies, you partially die. (if that makes sense) ......

Makes sense to me, but I like the words, open to change, better.

Why I we even talking about death, killing, and suicide on this forum. These are topics far from being uplifting and motivating.
Wassup with that sh!+???
I agree, it is too depressing. That is why I said, I get scared and my will to live takes over.

Some good view points there opening up a good debate.
I think that if people want to admit that there have been times in their lives when they thought that there was only one option open to them, then by posting that experience here, other people going through the same difficult period in their own life perhaps will take heart that we have come through it, and are all the stronger a person for it.
Happy7117's opening words on this thread?
I know this may be a touchy subject but....
I was just wondering about how extreme stuttering can get to take over a person's life, not realy ed at anyone but in general...and yes it's supposed to be depressing because extreme stuttering can make one feel that way!! It can make one want to drop a bomb on the whole world!! I don't think we should be limited to positive experiences, but I think we should include touchy experiences as well!! Good luck to all of us!

I for one, don't want to drop a bomb on anyone, the world has enough problems. Good luck to us all.

That's an interesting post. Until recently, I did not think that people could/would be that down(hearted) about their stutter that they would want to physically damage themselves. That is until I got the N.S.A's D.V.D. "Transcending Stuttering", in which we are introduced to 7 PWS & their stories. A couple in the film talked about the "pain of humiliation being greater than physical pain", & how they physically damaged themselves as opposed to being humiliated by their stutter.

at first this post did not make sense, or maybe it did i just did not want to endorse the thought of adding phsical pain to such agonizing hurt as created by severe speech problems. but now, i think that maybe its possible, i remember once when i was a teen, i got a tatoo done, i remeber the pain, which was slight and since then i've had at least 7 more. heres the funny thing, theyve all somehow coincided with particularly painful periods of my life. like the tear for my favorite uncles death etc. weird huh!

I can handle any kinds of pain, but physical pain. I don't have tattoo's or piercing, but I have an lot of badges.
