Anybody have facial grimaces when speaking?? I often because for the past few weeks I have been having these jaw spasms, where my mouth would open up and down, I don't know why but it was definately unusual and weird or freaky...!!

I often wondered if it was or is a symptom of extreme stuttering while forcing words out...my father stated it looked like I had tetanus when I was doing that!!!

I often wondered if I had or have tetanus and that makes me have these jaw spasms when trying to force words out!!

Anyway, anyone have mouth contortions or grimaces while stuttering?? And why do we have that happen when it's truly an ugly sight to seen by others???

i get facial grimaces when i block up which is at least once every 2 sentences, i just cant get the word out, sometimes this has gone on for more than a minute - quite embarassing but what can you do, chin up and move on

I get grimaces a lot. Basically, eye twitching, trembling jaw and moving my hand. Recently I also started taping my feet.
In difficult situations, for instance if someone asks me something in the street, or if I have to say my name, I can even stay blocked grimacing for some time before anything meaningful gets out of my mouth.
I agree with you that this hurts.
I also know that people to whom I speak do not like that. But at the same time it really does help me to speak. The big problem of course is that the effect wears off and it needs more and more grimaces to help.
I know that but when I am faced with the choice between making a big grimace or hand or foot movement to help me force a difficult sound out or abandon a sentence before the end, I nearly always choose the grimace.

My lip will sometimes tremor in a block and I rarely make eye contact in case I do in deed have a facial spasm.

Hi there

I dont grimace, but when I have a bad run I tend to blink alot, and the more I try to control it the worse it gets. I have read somewhere about uncontrollable motor tics associawith ADD...is there maybe a link between the two?
