Hello,
I am 29 years old and over the last 4 or so years I have developed what I think is a small stuttering problem. I have an appt with my doctor in a couple weeks and will start there. But to make sure I am able to accurately describe what is happening, I was searching the internet and found this board.
I can't pinpoint when exactly it started, or why. It seems like it has gradually become a little worse, but I may just notice it more. Up until around 4 years ago, I don't recall ever doing it. I remember when it first started I thought it was odd, but didn't give it much thought after that. I have asked all my friends and they have said they didn't notice it until I mentioned it,and didn't think it was abnormal.
What happens to me is that I will be talking and all of a sudden my brain seems to get ahead of my mouth. It is hard to describe, but it is like the "stream" is interrupted and I can't get a sound out. My lips just don't cooperate. If I catch it quick, the first sound isn't that noticeable, but if I keep going it seems to get worse until I stop completely and have a reset, so to say. Like when you fall down some stairs and catch yourself a couple times, with each slip getting worse until you just fall.
The frequency that it happens is random. I can go a couple months without it (at least where I don't notice it anyway) and then it seems like it bunches up. I have tried to pinpoint what I am doing when it occurs without much luck. If I am with my friends, family, etc. it will happen, but usually just one time and if I "reset" all is well. When I am in a situation where I am not really comfortable (not necessarily nervous) it seems to come back even after a "reset". I also notice it more often when I am short on sleep, but I get much more sleep now than when I was younger and it didn't occur then. I also never stuttered as a child.
Sorry for the long post and thank you to anyone who can help out.
