If you could please respond to this poll about whether you stutter when reading out loud to people, it would be greatly appreciated.

I don't like reading a speech to a crowd. I use cue cards and I have control on the words I use and I guess that is why I don't stutter as much when giving a speech.

Does not matter how many people I read aloud to! Wheather it is 1, 2, or 10 or more, when I read aloud I stutter and it's a pain in the butt!!

I only ever stutter when talking one-on-one with people.

When I'm making a speech, I have no problems... Perhaps its the position of authority?

I am a skiing instructor and a sailing instructor and I have never stuttered when giving my classes talks and shouting instructions tothem. However, at the moment, i am working as a student employee in a bank and I stutter all the time - even in answer to 'how are you'!!

I think its the balance of power. If I feel inferior to people it makes me more wary, and less myself, which makes my speaking worse.

I have the same issue and I wish I knew how to address this issue. I'm sure there is a way to address this aside from speech therapy

I have voted "no". I find that when I am reading out aloud that I have no problems, it is when I am one-on-one with a person/group when I block/stutter.

I think that when I read text out aloud, it is just that, reading text in a pre-set format and I do not have to think too much, whereas when I speak in a conversation I have to think about what I am going to say and structure it accordingly, and that seems to be where my brain gets mixed up and muddled.

Hi Riverman.
I know where you are coming from. I too have most of my problems 1/1. I find it hard to think & speak coherently. Let alone stutter in a controlled way.I've learnt to think of what I want to say, run a scan over it to see if I'm likely to block; then say it in technique. I use "Natural 9s". It was developed from "Smooth Speech". I am now suprising myself at the complexity of the ideas I am able to convey. But, by the same token, it is bloody hard work at times. Addressing a group of 20-30 is no sweat at all, & speaking for approx 5-7 minutes @ a time.
