Does anyone else wonder why when people say "stop talking" for example while taking a test, that they don't say "stop stuttering to that person" when it comes to stuttering??

Stuttering is our way of talking, so when people ask us "Who are you talking to??", Shouldn't they be asking "Who are you stuttering too??" since we are stuttering while expressing ourselves...

Because I'm not sure if stuttering is a real way of talking??

I mean talking is clear effortless speech, but stuttering is haltering stopages and breaks, and interruptions..

So would stuttering be considered the same as talking?? I don't know if it would be....!!!!

I like to think as fluent speech as a foreign language to stutterers too!! Foreign languages take practice and years of skill to learn..the same with a stutterer learning to speak fluent...it has years of learning and practice to get it right!!!!

No, happy, I disagree with you here.

Stammering is a condition related to talking, as is having a lisp, or not being able to pronounce the letter "R".

It's like somebody who is accident prone, and they're told "stop falling over", but not told "stop walking".

Anyway, if somebody said to me "stop stuttering to that person", I would certainly have a few choice words to say to that person, whereas if they said "stop talking to that person", I would take that as being far less offensive.

Disagreements in posts help us see things in a different light!!

Indeed, as long as we all respect the other's point of view.

Just out of interest, Happy7117, where are you from?

I'm from Syracuse, NY..

I'm going to have to agree with power of three here. I would find it very offensive if someone told me to stop stuttering. One you can't control it and two its a disability and would be very uncalled for to call attention to it. Like for instance someone with cerebral palsy you wouldnt say "stop limping" when you want them to stop walking, that would be horrible. Just my opinion.

Indeed it would be uncalled to say to one to "stop stuttering"..but if that's the way a stutterer communicates, woulda person say "stop talking for a second", or would they say "stop stuttering for a second" when all the stutterer does is stutter?? A perfect alternative would be to say. "could you be quiet a second??"...

One you can't control it

I agree and disagree on that point...I agree that one cannot control the amount of times or how much he or she stutters, and they cannot help the fact that they stutter,,and that it just happens...

But I also disagree that it cannot be controlled..I think when a persons is stuttering, he or she can use the techniques they were taught in therapy if they took therapy to help control how they sound...but I tried that already and it did not do nothing for me, because I am often not concentrating on fluency skills hard enough when all I want to do is express my self...

One can also control their stuttering by using the best method I always thought helps in any situation, a stutter device like a DAF-FAF aid...

So in other words stuttering can be controlled with the right tools or techniques or devices, but that depends on if you have them....

The only way to control stuttering without techniques or a device, is don't say much....I'm not saying do not talk at all, but just say less than one normally would if the stutter is bad........
