Thumbs up

Hi Robina. My teenage daughter has a stammer. She has had it since she was about 6 0r 7. Have you had speech therapy? My daughter controls her stammer by using a costal breathing technique. She attended the Starfish Project when she was 11 and has never looked back since. I'm not saying it was easy, she has had to work really hard. But I am so glad we went and had the chance learn this technique. The Starfish Project is based in East Sus (so not too far from you) and the lady who runs it is called Anne Blight. She is lovely and really supportive and understands so much about stammering. Have a look at the website at www.starfishproject.co.uk Good Luck Robina! Tracey

Hi. Speaking from experiences with my daughter and speech therapy she recieved from NHS, I think you would be much better trying Starfish. We found that the speech therapy didnt work because we were not shown any kind of technique that could help. Basically my daughter was taught relaxation techniques that we practised before she went to bed or before she set off to school. Although she was quite relaxed after doing these, they didnt help her when she was trying to get her words out and her words were stuck. She needed a strategy to use there and then. Having said all that I have spoken to quite a few peope who stammer, about the therapy they have received and a lot depends on where you live as to what services are provided. You could go to your doctor and ask what they can do. Although once again my advice would be to ring Anne Blight at Starfish! Go for it! With regard to your stammer it will be the best thing you ever do!
