I'm Elyssa - funny how easy it is to introduce myself online . This June I graduated from high school a whole year early and will be heading to college in just a few weeks! For as long as I can remember I've stuttered and throughout my life I have tried numerous techniques to overcome it, to no avail. Recently I got the SpeechEasy device, hoping and praying it could solve all my problems and get me ready for college. After paying over $5000 for the SpeechEasy I was absolutely crushed when it did little to fix my stutter. Now I just don't know what to do. How am i going to make friends at college when I can't even introduce myself? Whether I like it or not, I'm moving over 300 miles away from my friends and family in a few weeks and...I truly don't know how i'm going to survive. |

Aww wow I feel so bad for your situation. Don't let that stop you though! Just try your best. Fortunately most college students are a tad bit more mature, so you wont have to worry about experiencing to many ignorant people. The people you meet will most likely not even think twice about it. Just be conformable w/yourself and everything else will flow.!

Keep your head up...maybe meet people in your area online first so when you finally meet them you have a repoire...with that said there are alot of nutbags online as well so take that into consideration. If your going to a major university perhaps they have a speech therapy center. The school I went to had a student center with all kinds of stuff like that. Im sure people have given you advice all your life on how not to stutter. The first thing I have come to accept is that I will always stutter almost like its a part of who I am. The next thing is to be able to learn what keeps you from going over the point of no return. People will tell you to do this and do that and some of there advice will help but it all comes down to what you do with that advice and how you can apply it to your own daily life. Hope all is well and dont have too much fun in college, some people say its the best 6 years of there life lol

My name is Jon,
Firstly I am sorry that you weren't able to find success with speecheasy. It's my understanding they have a 60 day money back periord if that helps. I have stuttered since about the third grade. I used to hate my stutter, no amount of thearpy or techniques could help me overcome it. I still have my stutter at 25. I deceided shortly after highschool that, my stutter is apart of me. Like it or not its here to stay. There's nothing I could do to get speecheasy or anything else to help at that time and I chose to embrace what I couldn't change. I am of the mindset that I will tell you what I want no matter how long it will take, if you don't want to listen then fine I will go find someone else that will. I also have found that college age kids will generally (I mean that loosely) be more accepting of others and their differences. Don't let this rule your life embrace as part of who you are. So what it takes me 30-60 seconds, if not longer, to say my last name. It's been my experience that the more comfortable you are with your stutter the more others become comfortable around you and the less akward it can be. Personally I hate the akward face most people make when I stutter, that don't know me, so I have used humor to break that tension and get to a comfortable level with who I am speaking to. The more I have done that over the past few years the better it has worked for me. I wish you all the best in college. If you have any questions or anything else feel free to PM me. Take care, Jon |

Hi Elyssa, i can see your starting college and are pressured by the the way you will communicate with people. this is probably why the speech easy device isn't working well don't worry too much about your stuttering, you'll be just fine.
there aint a cure for for stuttering you can check the international stuttering association, british stammering association and the indian stammering association websites that provide very useful information to significantly reduce your stuttering. other websites such as kill your stutter in 10 minutes are complete scams. |
