I was watching celebrity mastermind last month and there was a writer taking part, Jimmy McGovern is a TV writer in the UK and he stuttered and it was noticable. Now to me takes guts and I take my hat off to him for doing that.

I forget the guys name, but he stars in Buffy the Vampire slayer (TV Series). Someone posted the name early in the fall.

I just want to clarify something. Winston Churchill was not a stutterer. He just had a lisp and he went to a speech therapist for it. I dun't know how do we say he stuttered. Just listen to his speeches !!

Moses? Is that an established biblical teaching? If so, I never heard of it!

I believe he is known for having over-come his stutter...so listening to his speeches won't help to determine that. I always thought he was a stutterer...as he's listed in most lists that number famous stutterers.

Maybe everyone's been wrong.

Churchill was famous for replacing words that he felt he wouldn't be able to get out so he had to have a very large vocabulary. This is something I read when I was a kid and something I used myself in school. 99% of the people I know wouldn't know I stutter.

I do the same thing...word replacement is a biggie for me. Most people don't know I stutter...unless they know me beyond mere acquaintance at work. If they talk with me for about 5 minutes or more...they *might might might* catch on.

What's not clear is the degree of stuttering of these famous people. For example, an actor could ruin a filming session if on a non-fluent day.

Some weeks ago, I attended a conference, and the guy speaking was a PWS. He was really good at hiding it, but I noticed some of his blocks and word sustitutions. The guy was a master in controlling stuttering while speaking in public. In my work as a professor I also speak in public, but I'm not as good as him regarding hiding the stutter.

You're saying he had a covert stammer? Wow, I didn't know that...I've always done that. And it's probably the same with me.. 99% don't know I stutter.

I'm around the high 80%, but every now and then, I would slip up and it use to drive me crazy to see how people would react. I was so worried about the after effects, trying to read or get an feeling from other people that knew about my slip up or if they were told of my slip up.

I'll have silent blocks and instead of pushing myself to say something I'll use a different word or just forget about it... And yeah I hate to see the look on people's faces and to think maybe they're suspecting something... Reading outloud is something I havn't done for, I think, 3 years now. Even thou I didn't stammer at that period of my life I still freaked. I think it's cause I remember being forced to do it when I was younger by this teacher who I thought I could trust cause I had asked her to not have to read. I guess we're drifting off the main subject now thou lol Waiiit... you did mean "read" in that sense I hope? haha Either way I think it's awesome to read about famous people who have or have overcome their stammers. Cause it gives hope.
