I got Doom for the Xbox yesterday, and I thought it would be a great way to get the anger out from my stuttering by shooting some monsters.. Or on those Grand Theft Auto Games, it helps me to run over things and run over people as a way to take out my anger for my stuttering.. Or if I need to give my mind a rest from stuttering, or to calm my anger down from the stuttering, a relaxing puzzle game like Oxyd (a computer puzzle game), Tetris, or Chip's Challenge or the like might help too... What games do YOU play to help deal with the anger from the stuttering??? Any good Stuttering Stress Buster games out there that I do not know of!? |

Dont play video games anytime, had enough of computers after a day working on one.
I find a good anger buster is the gym, a bike ride or a nice 5 mile jog to clear my head. After that I feel that I have achieved something. Nick |

If you are seeking to deal with stuttering this way, you are seeking an escape from reality, and IMO that is only going to make the problem worse. The only way to deal with stuttering is to face it, not turn away from it. If what you are doing to deal with stuttering is not working, then you need to seek other solutions, not escapism. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but as a stutterer I see what you are doing and I am telling you that this is not the way to go. Are you in therapy? If so, you need to discuss your anger with your therapist. If not, you need to seek therapy. Playing video games may make you feel better temporarily but it will never help you deal with your stuttering. |

And the mean part is that I was not allowed to talk about my frusterations and how to cope with the frusterations rom my stuttering..as the therapist said, "Adam, this is not a counseling session, but a fluency therapy session"... That realy ticked me off. I was not allowed to voice my frusterations, but to work on fluency techniques only. I think that is why I chose to stop going..because I was not allowed to talk about my frusterations and anger dealing with my stuttering..that should be part of therapy.... |

It sounds like you had an unsympathetic therapist. IMO, it is inexcusable for a therapist not to listen to the frustrations of their clients to try to help them through them. That is part of therapy. When I was in therapy, my therapist allowed me to talk about my frustrations and she listened and she gace advice on how to handle my frustrations. Like you, being able to talk about my frustrations helped me deal with them much better.
What might help you better than anything else is to find a stuttering support group, if one is near to you, where you can talk about your frustrations. Another thing you can do is use this forum as a sounding board for your frustrations. Write out exactly what problems you are having and what emotions you are feeling and let people here help you through them. "We" are your support group. We are better than any video game in helping you deal with your anger. There may be other solutions available also. The goal is express what you are going through and get feedback from others who understand and care. That is the best of all possible releases. |

I have been trying for years to find a support group near me, but there is not one. I am from Syracuse, NY and the nearest support group is in Manhattan- 5 hours away!..Realy makes me mad!! More than anything, I think a support group near where I live would help immensely...I also am thinking of joining the National Stuttering Association (NSA), and Stuttering Foundation of America..those are the only official support groups I can think of... I thought about the video game post I started previosly, and I think I may either delete it or change it..because it realy does not help stuttering at all..video games are fun to play that's true, but I think they provide a distraction from stuttering.. Or I might move the post to the General Chat... And as for the forum itself, it is probably the best support group in itself... I mean a group of people from all walks of life sharing angers, fears, hopes, concerns, stories, inspirations all related to the problem we are all trying to unravel..stuttering...what could be better!!
