I've had a stutter for the past 10 years - and is the only thing (the stutter, me) being the difference between earning £12k a year and £40k a year with my IT Skills. I've done a little research into available techniques, such as DAF and this wonderdrug - and with speech therapy having made me worse (and my brother, and father, both sufferers too) - I decided to look into DAF a little further. There are devices freely available (well not freely, for a small fortune) which simply delay feedback your own voice. It strikes me as odd that with the currently technology going into mobile phones, that noone appears to have made a simple Java applet that would have the same effect. There are java applets to change your voice, play soduku games and Strip Poker, but nothing this simple. Am I wrong, having missed from Google such a peice of software? Or is anyone aware of anything similar in the making? I've probably gone on a bit in this : for which I apologise - but would appreciate anyones thoughts - it might even be something I might consider taking on myself should I find the time to do so. Many thanks Kryt |

Welcome to the forum Kryt.. Like myself another IT bod...
It seems to be the industry of choice for stutterers :| I like your idea.. I wonder if it would be possible.. Could be onto a serious moneymaker there... I'm a bit skeptical to the whole DAF thing though at the moment, although I only heard about it for the first time whilst reading through this forum yesterday. I dont see how a delay in hearing your voice can make the initial words come out any easier. |

Heh, sorry
No, I dont - but I do admit to having " Bowling" and " Slot Machine" on there. Ironically perhaps, my wife plays them more often than I do.I've not actually yet tried DAF - and the software for PC's seems entirely pointless : as has been mentioned by many other members of this forum, I do not stutter at all when talking to myself, to my wife, or to my computer. I don't even stutter when using voice communication systems in online games (!) So emulating this on a PC is not a lot of good unless I'm also talking to someone else I do stutter to. Well, I think I'll look into Java programming a little more - I'm more of a hardware/software guy than a programmer, but it will help pass some time ![]() Cheers for the replies |

I have been thinking about the suggestion of a java DAF program for the mobile phone but really dont believe it would be possible. Java is good language for mobiles as it works across many different phone manufacturers handsets however really doesnt allow you create anything potentially nasty and evil, which could harm a users handset for example like viruses..
If it was possible, I imagine there would be voice masquerading programs out there already, making you sound like that guy from the 'Scream' movie ("HELLO SYDNEY!") without you even knowing it... This got me to wondering if you guys ever use to make calls and have the same trouble. I find I still dont like initiating calls even with .. but I think I cope better receiving calls.. Perhaps because of the mic on the laptop, I find myself speaking very very loudly, which tends to help... Which leads me to wondering if people have used with DAF software and what the results are... |

Stange, but when I'm on the phone, and if there is back ground noise, I will talk loud and I don't find myself stuttering.
