I've decided to try something Dangerous!, and I'm looking help!! Every Friday Ny friends and I go to a local cafe for lunch, They always get all variuod types of coffee and anything from a wrap to a club sandwich, me, I get a prepacked soggy sandwich and plain black coffee. Anytime I go into the cafe I always get a sense of fear that I'll stammer when I go to order, even though I often eat out and order food in loads of places all the time. My anxiety is keeping me in my comfort zone and I want to push this out. I'm sick of soggy ham sandwiches!!! I'm going to go there every day next week and order what I want at the counter and get a cappichino with extra milk. When I come back I'll let you know how I got on, But here's where you can help. Does anyone here every try things like this? Intentionally put themselves into tough situations repeatedly to increase self confidence? If so can you share your experiences and types of situations you put yourself into.Maybe we can try a few experiments together. Charlie |

Funny, as I did something similar years back.
I had a decent therapist in middle school. I also had--at first to my own dislike--some private therapy during the summer. It went fine, and the private sessions, though a bit overpriced, were a nice bonus. It helped me a lot, I must say. I was really struggling at one point, and my therapist suggested we try an excercise. Now believe me, I had tried many of these before, so I thought this would be the same monotony of repeating words endlessly. He went over to his bookshelf and pulled out his phone book. He came back over to be with the book, and told me to call any store, and ask for their hours. That's it. It actually helped me. Ha, just wanted to tell a story. Hope you liked it. |

It's funny you made this post. Within the last 3 weeks I would have something I want to say and I would know I would stutter on it so I wouldn't say it.
Then immediately, I would think this is B.S. so I would say it. This is ordering at a restaurant or just talking to someone. I began to look at it this way: If I think I will stutter and not say what I want, then the stuttering "coward" wins. So I say heck with it. If there is something I want to say. Then I will say it.
